Skyhawks Scoreboard: Fort Lewis College golfer Matt Huntley places second in Arizona

Byrne completes goalkeeper of the week hat trick

Fort Lewis College golfer Matt Huntley held the 36-hole lead at the Western New Mexico University Fall Intercollegiate but couldn’t hold off St. Mary’s Emilio Gonzales for the title during Tuesday’s third-and-final round.

Huntley, a junior from Tascosa, Texas, shot rounds of 64 and 70 on Monday at The Golf Club at Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona, but a 1-over 73 in the third round allowed Gonzales, who was two shots back entering the round, to take the title after his 67 on Tuesday.

Gonzales shot under par in all three rounds and finished with a 13-under 203, four shots clear of Huntley and California State University-San Marcos’ Chris Tuulik, who also played under par in all three rounds.

As a team, the Skyhawks finished tied for 10th with Claremont-Mudd-Scipps, a trio of three different colleges from Claremont, California, with a score of 876.

Texas A&M Commerce was awarded the team title after finishing tied with CSU-San Marcos with scores of 851. Commerce earned the title because their non-counting score was lower than San Marcos’.

Twenty teams and 104 golfers competed at the tournament.

Tyler Blohm tied for 46th with a 223, Zane Sauer tied for 60th at 225, Hugh Taylor finished tied for 71st with a 227 and Austin Lieneman tied for 94th at 239 to round out the Skyhawks.

Men’s soccer

Peter Byrne, the goalkeeper for the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team, was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Goalkeeper of the Week for the third week in a row.

Byrne, a redshirt freshman from Missoula, Montana, made 11 saves during the weekend.

He stopped five shots in a 2-1 loss against Adams State on Friday, then made six saves in a 1-0 win against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday. He had an .846 save percentage for the weekend.

On the season, Byrne has played every minute of the Skyhawks’ eight matches and has made 47 saves against eight goals.
