Skyhawks Scoreboard: Fort Lewis College lands three on preseason All-RMAC men’s soccer team

FLC men’s soccer tied for fifth in preseason poll

The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team was well represented on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s Preseason All-RMAC team.

The Skyhawks landed three players – defender Sean Cleary, and forwards Salifu Jatta and Churchill Onumonu – on the 13-player team.

FLC tied for fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll with University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The Skyhawks received one of the 11 first-place votes.

Cleary, a junior, earned the same preseason honor last year and already has All-RMAC first team and second team selections in his previous two seasons at FLC.

Onumonu earned All-RMAC second team honors as a freshman last season after leading the Skyhawks with eight goals.

Entering his second season with the Skyhawks, Jatta, a senior, was a second team All-RMAC selection following the 2016 season.

Colorado Mesa was the top ranked team in the preseason poll. Colorado School of Mines was second, followed by Regis University and Metro State University-Denver rounding out the top four.

Mines’ Nikolaus Grotz was named the preseason player of the year.

FLC will open the 2017 season Friday, playing at No. 6 Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Women’s Soccer

The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team ranked eighth of 13 teams in the preseason RMAC coaches’ poll.

No Skyhawks were listed on the All-RMAC preseason team.

Mines is the preseason favorite to win the conference, receiving 10 of the 13 first-place votes. Regis was second, getting two first-place votes. Adams State, ranked 10th in the poll, received the final first-place vote.

Mines’ Emily Garnier and UCCS’s Grace Ramsden were named the preseason players of the year.

FLC will begin the 2017 season Friday, traveling to Portales, New Mexico, to play Eastern New Mexico.

Volleyball

The FLC volleyball team was ranked tied for 12th with Westminster College in the preseason coaches’ poll.

No FLC players were named to the All-RMAC preseason team.

Mines earned the preseason No. 1 ranking, receiving five of the 15 first-place votes. Metro State got six first-place votes and is ranked second. Mesa, which received two first-place votes, and Regis, which earned one first-place vote, closed out the top four.

FLC will start its season at the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Aggies Challenge this weekend in Goodwell, Oklahoma. The Skyhawks’ first game of the two-day tournament will be against Jarvis Christian College on Friday.
