The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team clinched the No. 3 seed in next week’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-1 victory against South Dakota School of Mines Friday afternoon in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The Skyhawks (9-5-4, 9-3-2 RMAC) didn’t need much time to break through the Hardrockers defense and got a goal in the third minute when Ty Lang played the ball to Max Fuentas, who put it past the Hardrockers keeper for his second goal of the season.
South Dakota Mines (3-11-2, 2-11 RMAC) pulled even with a goal from Justin Barkow in the 25th minute.
Lang recorded his second assist of the game in the 40th minute when his corner kick found Marshall Metzger, who headed the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-1. It was Metzger’s first goal of the season.
Ryan Lee sealed the victory in the 68th minute with his sixth goal of the season. Dylan Elder assisted on the goal.
FLC outshot the Hardrockers 16-9, and put six of its 16 shots on goal. The Skyhawks also earned 10 corner kicks compared to just two for the Hardrockers.
With the No. 3 seed in the RMAC tournament, the Skyhawks will host the sixth seed at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Dirks Field. However, the sixth seed has yet to be determined, with Regis, CSU-Puebo and Adams State all in the mix with one match remaining in the season.
The Fort Lewis College volleyball team’s struggles continued Friday night, as the Skyhawks dropped their seventh match in a row with a 19-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13 loss to New Mexico Highlands (7-11, 4-9 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Highlands’ Tiffany Matchet, Brianna Montano and Cynthia Norris rained kills down on the Skyhawks. Montano led the way with 20 kills, Norris had 18 and Matchet added 17.
Emily Dellenbach led Fort Lewis’ (8-13, 3-10 RMAC) offense with 13 kills.
