Skyhawks soccer Wellcomes a pair of All-Americans

Riley, Weiss named to the third and second team

Two Skyhawks can count themselves among Division II’s top 40 women’s soccer players nationally, while another proved one of the best in the region.

Sam Weiss was named to the second team and Lauren Riley to the third on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America team, and both were first-team All-South Central Region selections, where they were joined by teammate and second-team all-region choice Madyson Wellcome.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference had five total players honored as All-Americans, with Colorado Mines’ Anna Evans earning first-team honors, Mines’ Kelsey Neal and Weiss landing on the second team, and Riley and Metro State’s Abby Rolph on the third team.

Weiss was FLC’s primary offensive force in 2013, leading the 16-6-0 Skyhawks with 10 goals and 23 points to go with three assists. The two honors are part of a nice offseason haul that also saw Weiss win RMAC Offensive Player of the Year and an all-district selection.

Riley was one of the lynchpins of a defensive effort that saw the Skyhawks allow just 13 goals all season and finish 15th nationally in goals-against average. The honors will go alongside Riley’s selection as RMAC Defensive Player of the Year and an all-district nod.

Wellcome was Riley’s partner-in-crime in the central defense, helping lead the senior-laden crew to its gaudy defensive numbers.
