Skyhawks stay hot, sweep Black Hills

Golfer Edwards qualifies for regional championships
The Fort Lewis College softball team has had lots to celebrate recently. FLC has won 11 of its past 12 games, including a four-game sweep over Black Hills State over the weekend.

Late-inning heroics, including a wild three-run no-doubter from Sydney Stewart, guided the Fort Lewis College softball team to a key sweep over Black Hills State University on Sunday.

FLC won Saturday’s games 6-4 and 10-4, then turned around a pair of one-run games on Sunday, 7-6 and 4-3.

The Skyhawks, however, had to rally on Sunday. Nine of the team's 11 runs came in the sixth and seventh innings of the doubleheader.

Fort Lewis has won 11 of its past 12 games and is now 19-26 overall and 19-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. BHSU is 10-28, 8-28.

The Skyhawks will play their final regular-season series Friday and Saturday against Regis University (31-20, 25-11). The action starts at noon Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.

Edwards earns spot regional

Rewarded for consistency and poise throughout the season, Fort Lewis College men's golfer Darren Edwards was selected to play in the NCAA Division II South Central/West Regional at the Pueblo Country Club on May 5-7.

The NCAA Tournament will feature 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals and will be played at four regional sites. Edwards is one of four individual athletes selected to compete at regionals, joined by Mauricio Figuero (Texas A&M International), Joey Geary (Western New Mexico) and Masen Ward (Westminster).

Edwards is coming off a ninth-place finish at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship last week.

FLC lacrosse falls to Regis, UCCS

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team began its final road series of the regular season against No. 4 Regis University on Friday night, but fell 16-2 against the Rangers.

On Sunday, FLC lost its final road game at UCCS, 15-9, despite a four-goal outing from Ellie Martinez.

With Adams State dropping its program this season, FLC will receive a forfeit on Thursday and conclude its regular season at home at 3 p.m. Saturday against CSU Pueblo.
