Small Bayfield cross country team runs at Joe Vigil Open in Alamosa

Junior finishes in the top 15

Bridget Goddard led the way for Bayfield High School’s cross country team Saturday.

The Wolverines’ junior finished 15th at the Joe Vigil Open in Alamosa, completing the course in 21 minutes, 57.44 seconds.

Taos’ Cora Cannedy won the race in 19:29.66, just edging teammate Elizabeth Reyes in 19:29.67.

Taos easily won the girls meet with 21 points, while BHS finished ninth with 201 points.

Rachel Cooper took 31st in 21:57.44; Amber Johnson was 48th at 26:26.24; Sarah Ruybal finished 50th in 27:05.7; and Mylee Sanders took 57th in 32:20.53.

The Wolverines didn’t bring enough boys to qualify for a team score, but Alamosa won the boys meet with 35 points.

Bayfield’s Brandon Steuver finished in 20:28.63, good for 59th. Joey Sandrey ran 20:47.9 for 67th, and Justis Herrera was 87th in 24:46.3.

Lamar’s Caleb Crum won the boys individual race in 16:11.28.

The Wolverines will run at the Southwest Sunset Classic at 6 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Golf Club, which they’ll co-host with Durango High School.
