LGBT law leaves Duke looking for opponent

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke has an opening on its men’s basketball schedule because of the state law that impacts LGBT people.

The Blue Devils were supposed to play Albany on Nov. 12 as part of the Hall of Fame Tipoff tournament, but there’s no opponent listed on that day in Duke’s schedule that was released Wednesday.

Holly Liapis, spokeswoman for the State University of New York system that includes Albany, says that game won’t be played because of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order banning publicly funded, non-essential travel to North Carolina.

Cabrera, Vegas tied at Barbasol Championship

OPELIKA, Ala. – Angel Cabrera and Jhonattan Vegas dominated the par-5 holes in steamy conditions Thursday to share the Barbasol Championship.

The 46-year-old Cabrera, from Argentina, eagled the par-5 13th on Grand National’s Lake Course, holing a 60-footer from the fringe, and birdied the two other par 5s in a bogey-free 6-under 65.

Crowded top of LPGA leaderboard in Ohio

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Hyo Joo Kim bogeyed her final hole Thursday for a 5-under 66 and a share of the Marathon Classic lead with fellow South Korean player Mirim Lee and Japan’s Haru Nomura.

Kim had four birdies in a six-hole stretch on her second nine at Highland Meadows.

Grizzlies, Conley agree to record deal

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Grizzlies wanted to keep Mike Conley so much that they gave their veteran point guard the richest contract in NBA history.

For Conley, the basketball and pressure is in his court after signing a five-year, $153 million deal Thursday.

Conley will earn more than new Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant, a seven-time All-Star with four league scoring titles and an NBA Most Valuable Player award.

Colts to create statue of Peyton Manning

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts have commissioned city firefighter and artist Ryan Feeney to create a statue of former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

The Colts say the statue will be placed outside Lucas Oil Stadium next year. Manning was quarterback of the Colts for 14 seasons, leading them to a Super Bowl title.

Portugal is up in new FIFA rankings

ZURICH – European champion Portugal has risen two places to No. 6 in the FIFA rankings, and Copa America winner Chile stays fifth.

Argentina is still No. 1 despite losing to Chile in the final for the second straight year.

Belgium remains second after losing to Wales in the European Championship quarterfinals. Wales climbed 15 places to 11th.
