Chalmers opens with lead at Barracuda

RENO – Greg Chalmers birdied five of the final six holes Saturday to increase his lead to six points in the Barracuda Championship, the PGA Tour’s lone modified Stableford scoring event.

The 42-year-old Australian had seven birdies and a bogey for a 15-point round and 39-point total at Montreux in the scoring system that awards eight points for double eagle, five points for eagle, two points for birdie and deducts a point for bogey and three points for double bogey or worse.

Ben Martin and Gary Woodland were tied for second. Martin had eight birdies in a 16-point round, the best score of the week. Woodland had an 11-point round. He won the 2013 event for the last of his two PGA Tour titles.

Horford, Celtics, agree to $113M deal

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that prized free agent Al Horford agreed to terms on a four-year, $113 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

Horford made his decision on Saturday evening after spending most of the first two days meeting with the Wizards, Celtics and the Atlanta Hawks, the team that drafted him. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract cannot be signed until July 7.

Horford, however, made it clear with a simple tweet: “Celtic pride,” it said, followed by 18 shamrocks.

Panthers toughen blue line, sign Demers

The Florida Panthers have continued overhauling their blue line by signing defenseman Jason Demers to a five-year contract.

Demers had seven goals and 16 assists in 62 games for the Dallas Stars last season. He’s a puck-moving defenseman who general manager Tom Rowe says will help the Panthers’ transition game and special teams.

The 28-year-old will be one of several new faces on defense for the Panthers next season. Already they traded for and signed Keith Yandle, traded away Erik Gudbranson and Dmitry Kulikov, let Brian Campbell leave in free agency and acquired Mark Pysyk.

Germany beats Italy 6-5 in shootout

BORDEAUX, France – Jonas Hector scored the winning penalty as Germany beat Italy 6-5 in a wild shootout to reach the European Championship semifinals on Saturday.

After the quarterfinal finished 1-1 after extra time, Matteo Darmian had his penalty saved with the 17th attempt of the shootout to give Hector the chance to earn Germany a first competitive win over Italy in nine tries.

The left back slotted his kick beyond Gianluigi Buffon and the world champions were in their sixth consecutive semifinal at a major tournament.

Germany has won six of its last seven spot kicks since losing the final of Euro 1976 to Czechoslovakia.

Mesut Ozil gave Germany the lead in the 65th minute, breaking open a tactical stalemate in Bordeaux by racing onto Hector’s deflected cross to steer in a finish from eight meters.
