NEW YORK – Jacob deGrom conceded only two hits and struck out 10 in seven innings, pitching the New York Mets past Colorado 3-0 on Wednesday night for their second consecutive shutout against the Rockies.

Yoenis Cespedes hit his first home run for the surging Mets, who have won 10 of 12. Juan Uribe stroked an RBI-double in the fourth, and Michael Cuddyer followed with a run-scoring single on a night when both players reached 1,500 career hits.

Last season’s NL Rookie of the Year, deGrom (11-6) finished with his eighth career double-digit strikeout game and fourth this season.

Jorge De La Rosa (7-5) gave up two runs and four hits over six innings for the last-place Rockies.

Bills race to claim a now controversial player

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills claimed Ikemefuna Enemkpali off waivers from the New York Jets on Wednesday, a day after the linebacker broke quarterback Geno Smith’s jaw with a punch in the team’s locker room.

USOC optimistic in 2024 bid from Los Angeles

If the United States is going to bid for the 2024 Olympics, that bid will come from Los Angeles.

After a hastily called meeting Wednesday, U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said he was optimistic the USOC could work out a plan to make Los Angeles the bidder. He said he hoped the decision would be official by the end of the month.

The news comes two weeks after the USOC dropped a Boston bid that was short on support. Los Angeles isn’t showing any of those problems. Mayor Eric Garcetti has said he’d have no problem signing the host city contract that the mayor in Boston refused to sign.
