UNC receives 3rd Notice of Allegations in NCAA case

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina has received a third Notice of Allegations from the NCAA outlining violations connected to its multi-year academic fraud scandal.

UNC spokesman Rick White said Wednesday that the university will publicly release the document but didn’t specify when. The statement didn’t comment on any changes compared to two earlier versions, both of which included five serious charges centered around years of irregular courses featuring significant athlete enrollments offered by a department.

The NCAA first filed charges in May 2015, then sent a revised notice in April. Both versions charged UNC with lack of institutional control in a case that grew as an offshoot of a 2010 probe into the football program.

Baylor penalized for football recruiting violations

WACO, Texas — Baylor has been fined and penalized after an investigation determined assistant football coaches committed recruiting and other NCAA violations.

The NCAA said Wednesday that a $5,000 fine will be imposed and that penalties against the football program include banning two assistants from off-campus recruiting for a 12-week period.

Baylor said the infractions occurred in spring 2015 and that the NCAA adopted the university’s self-imposed penalties. NCAA officials say a third assistant coach attended a game involving a future opponent, which amounted to prohibited scouting.

Curry auctions shoes for Oakland fire victims

OAKLAND, Calif. — Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is auctioning off two special pairs of shoes to raise money for victims of the Oakland warehouse fire.

As of Wednesday morning on EBay, Curry’s shoes received 157 bids and were at a combined $20,000 on the auction site.

Curry wore the pair of white sneakers with the words “Oakland Strong” printed on them during a recent game against the New York Knicks. Warriors officials say he wore the other, more colorful shoes with the words “Ghost Ship” on them, during practice.

Both shoes have the initials of all 36 victims printed on them.

Owners pass new labor deal, players next

A new labor deal in the NBA is on the verge of being finalized, after owners voted Wednesday to approve a proposed seven-year collective bargaining agreement that was tentatively agreed to last week.

The owners’ vote was unanimous and players are expected to finish casting their ballots in the coming days. They spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the NBA nor the National Basketball Players Association has revealed specifics about the voting process publicly.

Teams met by teleconference on Wednesday to discuss and approve the proposed deal.

2 Swedish skiers injured at ski cross event in Italy

INNICHEN, Italy — Two Swedish freestyle World Cup skiers have been injured after crashing on the same Italian hill in a three-day span.

Anna Holmlund was seriously injured after crashing during training on Monday and is in a medically-induced coma. Sandra Naslund was injured during a race Wednesday. Naslund’s injuries are less serious. She will have X-rays on her elbow.

The 29-year-old Holmlund lost consciousness after hitting her head during the crash and was flown by helicopter to Bolzano, where she underwent brain surgery that night.

Holmlund is a three-time ski cross World Cup champion and won a bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She is currently second in the ski cross standings, with Naslund third.
