Sooners’ Mixon apologizes for punching woman

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon made a tearful public apology Friday, more than two years after punching a woman and breaking bones in her face.

Mixon was suspended for a year after an assault on Oklahoma student Amelia Molitor. He said at a news conference he wanted to apologize, but his legal team advised him not to.

Mixon said it is never acceptable to hit a woman and if he were in the same situation again he would walk away. He said he was disappointed he let down his team and family, especially his mother.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and the university. Stoops said Wednesday that if such an attack had happened today, Mixon would be off the team.

Sailing performance guru hired by British Cycling

MANCHESTER, England — One of the key figures behind Britain’s recent success in Olympic sailing has been hired as performance director at the country’s cycling federation.

Stephen Park’s appointment by British Cycling was announced on Friday, at a time of upheaval in the country’s most successful Olympic sport. British Cycling is currently without a technical director after Shane Sutton’s resignation in April this year over allegations of discrimination. The organization has also been defending its integrity in recent weeks amid allegations of wrongdoing, which led to its leaders being questioned at British parliamentary doping hearings on Monday. UK Anti-Doping officials have also visited British Cycling headquarters.

The 48-year-old Park, who isn’t a specialist in cycling, becomes British Cycling’s first performance director since Dave Brailsford’s departure in April 2014 to concentrate solely on Team Sky.

Thumb surgery for Smith bad news for Cavaliers

CLEVELAND — Cavaliers starting guard J.R. Smith will miss at least three months following surgery on his right thumb, a major injury that will have a ripple effect for the defending NBA champions.

The team says Smith, who suffered a “complex fracture” earlier this week, will need 12 to 14 weeks of recovery time.

The loss of Smith will force coach Tyronn Lue to make adjustments with his rotations and general manager David Griffin to alter the Cavs’ roster.

N.Y Jets coach Bowles in hospital with unknown illness

NEW YORK — New York Jets coach Todd Bowles has been hospitalized with what the team says is an “undisclosed illness,” and he did not travel for the game at New England on Saturday.

The Jets say Bowles is in stable condition, but it is uncertain if he will eventually join the team in time for the game.

If Bowles is unable to coach, assistant coach Mike Caldwell will fill in against the Patriots.

The 53-year-old Bowles is in his second season as coach of the Jets. After a 10-6 season last year, New York has struggled to a 4-10 mark, prompting questions about his future as coach.
