Busch rolls in and out of Texas with another W

FORT WORTH, Texas – Kyle Busch raced to his third consecutive NASCAR Nationwide victory this season and his sixth overall at Texas, leading 91 of 200 laps Friday night.

Busch is the first six-time winner in any series at the 1½-mile, high-banked Texas track. While driving a car he owned last season, Busch didn’t win in the Nationwide Series. He is back in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota this year. After finishing 22nd in the season opener at Daytona, he has four wins and a runner-up finish to push his series victory record to 55.Busch finished 2.27 seconds ahead of Brad Keselowski, while Austin Dillon was third and Dale Earnhardt Jr. fourth.

The race featured a Texas-record 11 leaders and 22 lead changes.

Sam Hornish Jr. maintained the series points lead despite finishing 34th.

Burke wins another award; Griner wins another Wooden

LOS ANGELES – Trey Burke of national runner-up Michigan won the John R. Wooden Award on Friday night, completing the sophomore guard’s sweep of the major player of the year awards.

Brittney Griner of Baylor won the women’s award for the second consecutive year. Burke, who also won the Naismith and Associated Press national player of the year trophies, is the first Michigan player to win in the award’s 37-year history.Burke received 2,808 points in voting by national basketball media, beating out Victor Oladipo of Indiana by 90 points in the closest outcome since 2006, when Duke’s J.J. Redick finished 72 points ahead of Gonzaga’s Adam Morrison.

Burke averaged 18.8 points and 6.8 assists in helping the Wolverines to the school’s first Final Four since 1993. They lost to Louisville 82-76 in the NCAA championship game Monday night, when Burke scored 24 points.

Burke said he would announce Sunday whether he’ll return to Michigan or enter the NBA draft.Griner is the fourth woman to win back-to-back Wooden Awards since the trophy was first given out in 2004. She averaged 23.8 points – third-best in the country – and 4.14 blocked shots as a senior, and she finished her career as the No. 2 scorer in NCAA history. She received 1,230 points, beating out runner-up Skylar Diggins of Notre Dame by 87 points.

USA Cycling has a new home in Limburg, Netherlands

COLORADO SPRINGS – USA Cycling signed a 10-year agreement with a municipality in the Netherlands to consolidate its training base for road, mountain bike, track and cyclocross racing.The facility in the Limburg municipality of Sittard-Geleen will be used year-round by about 130 athletes, USA Cycling vice president Jim Miller said Friday. Previously, the men’s endurance programs were based in Belgium, the women in Italy and the mountain bike program in Germany.The consolidated training base will include upgraded training facilities, housing, dining and a separate service course for the mechanics and ample storage space.Most of America’s top cyclists typically compete in Europe, so USA Cycling’s new European hub will allow them to train in a facility that is close to major international races.

USA soccer stars usher in a new women’s pro league

NEW YORK – Abby Wambach and Alex Morgan headline the National Women’s Soccer League, the third incarnation of a women’s professional soccer league in the United States.

The U.S. stars of the London Olympics will be joined by other national players in the eight-team league. The season will begin tonight with FC Kansas City hosting Morgan and the Portland Thorns FC in Overland Park, Kan. Wambach will play for the Western Flash in her hometown of Rochester, N.Y., and will open Sunday in Piscataway, N.J.
