State wrestling brackets released for high schools

The Colorado High School Activities Association announced its 2016 state wrestling brackets for all classes on Sunday.

Wrestlers from all over Colorado will congregate at Denver’s Pepsi Center from Feb. 18-20.

For the Class 2A Ignacio Bobcats, Ethan Appenzeller will meet Braden Kappel of Limon in the 138 weight class in the opening round.

Appenzeller finished the regular season with a 34-1 record and won the Class 2A Region 1 touranment on Saturday. Kappel had compiled a 21-11 record while taking fourth place in the Region 3 tournament.

“We’ve been training all year to beat the best,” Ignacio head coach Jordan Larsen said. “Every round of the state tournament fits that description.”

Tyler Beebe of Ignacio will take on Erik Perez of Center in the 132 weight class.

Beebe has a 33-10 record and finished second in regionals. Perez finished the year with a 30-15 record and took third in the Region 2 tournament.

At 160, Ignacio’s Lorenzo Peña will face on Ryan Saine of Manzanola.

Peña finished with a 40-4 record and came in third place at regionals. Saine finished with a 21-11 record and came in second place in the Region 2 tournament.

Bayfield sending four wrestlers

At the Class 3A tournament, Bayfield’s Ryan Nava is featured as the top seed in the 145 weight class.

Nava will face Dimitrius Flores of Mullen. Nava finished the year with a 35-4 record and came in first place at regionals. Flores finished with a 22-14 record and came in fourth at the Region 3 tournament.

“We’re not one to look at the brackets,” Bayfield head coach Neil Barnes said. “We have to win whoever is in front of us to win a state title.”

Sam Westbrook finished the year with a 38-2 record and will face Preston Duran of Alamosa who finished with a 22-11 record.

The two wrestlers will face off in the heavyweight division at the 285 weight class. Westbrook came in third in regionals and Duran came in second at the Region 2 tournament.

Tayler Winch will meet Ernest Quintana of Erie in the first round at 138.

Winch finished with a 17-5 record and came in second place at regionals. Quintana finished with a 33-14 record and third at the Region1 tournament.

Garrett Beebe will face Kyle Cisneros of Jefferson at 126. Beebe finished with a 33-11 record and took fourth place at regionals. Cisneros finished with a 44-4 record and took first place at the Region 3 tournament.

Gustavson represents DHS

With a fourth place finish in the 160-pound weight class, Durango High School senior Cole Gustavson qualified for the state tournament.

Gustavson finished the season 24-11 and used a win against Glenwood Springs’ Jack Ries to advance.

The lone Demon representing Durango will have a tough opening round matchup in Cheyenne Mountain’s 34-2 first place qualifier Zac Baker.

“Cole has gone toe-to-toe with everyone,” Durango head coach Leo Garand said after Saturday’s regional meet. “He has a very good chance at making the podium.”
