Steamworks to tap Molé Stout on Friday

Steamworks Brewing Co. will continue its Firkin Friday series by tapping its “Molé Stout” at 3 p.m. Friday. The goal of the firkin is to capture the essence of chocolate in traditional Mexican molé sauce

“For this (beer), we’ve steeped three different varieties of dried chilies and spices in our award-winning stout,” said Brewer Spencer Roper in a news release. “Then we refermented with the Imperial Stout. The chilies, spices and alcohol should provide a nice ‘warming’ factor with this beer.”

“We combined Honey Stinger Organic Acai Pomegranate gels with fresh spruce tips, which were then infused with our new English-style brown ale to provide a sweet backbone for the spicy and fruity esters of the beer,” said Quinn.

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine-tenths of a gallon. The word “firkin” is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn,” which means “fourth” as in one-fourth the size. Firkin beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered, contains no preservatives and is served at cellar temperature – cool but not cold.

Steamworks, 801 East Second Ave., initiated its Firkin Friday series to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons, and augment its regular offerings.
