Steamworks to tap Mucho Macho firkin Dec. 7

Herald Staff Report

Steamworks Brewing Co. plans to continue its ongoing Firkin Fridays series by tapping its “Mucho Macho” firkin at 3 p.m. Dec. 7.

The firkin is a raspberry vanilla imperial stout with Steamworks’ Macho Man Imperial Stout as a base.

The base stout has a chocolate and “roasty/toasty” dominance with toffee and bready undertones, but the firkin is “much bigger, fuller bodied and stronger,” said Steamworks Head Brewer Ken Martin, in a news release.

“For the additions we soaked some Madagascar vanilla beans in bourbon for about a month before dropping a few into the firkin along with the raspberry extract,” said Brewer Spencer Roper.

A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine-tenths of a gallon. The word “firkin” is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn,” which means “fourth,” as in one-fourth the size. Firkin beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered, contains no preservatives and is served at cellar temperature – cool but not cold.

Steamworks, 801 East Second Ave., began its Firkin Friday series to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons and augment its regular offerings.
