Steamworks Brewing Co. plans to continue its ongoing Firkin Fridays series by tapping its “My Other Car is a Unicorn” firkin at 3 p.m. Friday at its downtown brewpub and Purgy’s “Beach” at Purgatory Resort.
“We’ve jumped on board with the latest trend in IPAs by brewing a New England or ‘Juicy/Hazy’ style IPA,” said SteamworksHead Brewer Ken Martin, in a news release.
“These beers have a lower perceived bitterness than traditional IPAs, but are ‘heavy-handed’ in the flavor and aroma hops,” Martin said. “The hop varieties used are known for lending tropical fruit flavors and aromas to the beer rather than the usual citrusy or spicy/piney characteristics.”
“As we conceived our firkin, we thought, what better complement to these hops than mango,” said Brewer Spencer Roper, also in a news release. “We added a mango puree to each of the New England IPA firkins.”
A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine-tenths of a gallon. The word “firkin” is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn,” which means “fourth,” as in one-fourth the size. Firkin beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered, contains no preservatives and is served at cellar temperature – cool but not cold.
Steamworks, 801 East Second Ave., began its Firkin Friday series to introduce unusual, specialty craft beers to patrons and augment its regular offerings.
