My name is Emmett Kane, I am in eighth grade at Mountain Middle School. I am writing this because I am concerned about how ICE agents detained children who are my age in Durango. I don’t understand how these young children and their father did something wrong and deserve to be forced into custody and eventually deported.
I went to protest at the ICE detention center with my mother and brother on Monday, and I was horrified at how these children were basically jailed inside this building with barbed wire. Then on Tuesday, I learned how the ICE agents shot rubber bullets and tear gas unprovoked at the peaceful protesters. In fact, my grandpa, who fought for our country in Vietnam, also put his life on the line again for us, and without warning, was tear gassed.
I am also an avid World War II history buff, and what this whole thing with ICE is reminding me of is how the Nazi Gestapo rounded up and deported Jewish people just because they are Jewish.
Anyway, I am super mad, and I want to raise awareness of how history is repeating itself and that we need to stop it.
