Led by Summer Vigil, the Fort Lewis College women’s golf team opened its season Monday and Tuesday in Pueblo.
FLC finished in 11th out of 14 teams at the Sam Proal Invitational held at the Pueblo Country Club. As a team, the Skyhawks shot 89-over-par 665 after two rounds. Vigil tied for 26th with rounds of 82 and 80 on the par-72 course.
The tournament was won by Dixie State University, which shot 613 as a team. It was Colorado Christian’s Faith Kilgore who was the top individual player, as she shot 70 and 73 to finish at 1-under. She was six shots clear of Colorado Mesa’s Brandy McClain. Madison Moss of Dixie State led the Trailblazers with a two-round score of 6-over.
Vigil was tied for 35th after Monday’s opening round but improved two shots and nine places on the leaderboard Tuesday.
“Summer didn’t shoot a bad round on Monday, she just didn’t finish as well as she’s use to,” Fort Lewis coach Jim Foltz said in a news release. “Her putting and chipping was a tad bit off, and it cost her a couple strokes. But today, we worked on that out on the range before her round and she felt better today.”
The best round by an FLC player came from Sophie Schwartz, who shot a 79 Tuesday to back up an 86 Monday. She tied for 35th.
Brook Sturtevant shot rounds of 80 and 91 to tie for 50th. Amanda Westrick tied for 52nd after she shot 89 and 83, and Peyton Glenn tied for 57th after she posted 87 and 88 in the two rounds.
The Skyhawks were 11 shots back of 10th-place Western New Mexico and only 17 shots behind Chadron State and host CSU-Pueblo, which tied for seventh.
Next for the FLC women is a trip to Tiara Rado Golf Course Sept. 16-17 to compete in the Colorado Mesa University Maverick Invitational. Next week, the FLC men’s team will face Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo for its season-opener.
