Talk about town: Durango City Council honors policeman

Durango City Council honored Durango Police Officer Alec Doocy, left, for dousing a fire west of town. Cmdr. Robert Brammer, right, said Doocy took quick action during two other emergencies.

Durango City Council honored police Officer Alec Doocy on Tuesday for dousing a fire and his quick thinking in two other emergencies.

Doocy was leaving the Durango Police Department on April 17 when he observed smoke and flames near the homeless camp west of downtown Durango, Cmdr. Robert Brammer said.

Doocy drove to the area and walked a half mile through steep, wooded terrain where he found a large log fully engulfed by flames, an estimated 10 feet in height, Brammer said. He used a shovel to smother the fire with dirt and controlled the fire before firefighters arrived. Doocy reported the fire to Durango Fire Protection District before he left the scene.

In January, Doocy and another officer waded into a freezing irrigation ditch in an attempt to rescue a woman trapped in her car.

And he was among the first officers to respond in June to the Tercero Townhouse fire on West Third Avenue. He helped prevent additional deaths in the early morning blaze that killed one man, Brammer said.
