Sauer daughters thankful for support

The daughters of Leta Sauer, a lifetime Durango resident who passed away March 13, want to thank everyone for their condolences and kind words. We know our mother would have also appreciated them.

Katzin Music thanks community

We want to send a big thank you to all of the people who have made Katzin Music and Studios an important part of our community.

Katzin Music was a dream that Bob Katzin and Ruth Katzin Kilpatrick had. They wanted it to be a music store with studios for private lessons to serve local music teachers, students, parents and musicians. They wanted it to be a place people could go to nurture music education. It did just that – for almost 40 years.

Over the years, the Katzin family, its dozens of employees and hundreds of music teachers had one goal in mind: To serve our customers. Customers were the heart of Katzin Music, and we saw the best Durango had to offer. Thank you to all the folks – young and old – who came to our store with smiles and good attitudes.

Another thank you goes out to all the people who are working to keep the spirit of Katzin Music alive. Thanks to Stillwater Foundation – the wonderful music teachers and their students continue to make music at the same location under the name: Katzin Studios at Stillwater. Also, Katzin’s band instrument reair shop is still managed by Roger Smith and shares the same space.

And, to add to this good news, look for the opening of Jimmy’s Music and Supply at East Second Avenue and 15th Street. Jim Gillaspy, of Katzin fame, is gearing up to open his own music store to provide local musicians with products and services.

Thank you, Durango, and remember to shop local!

Cowboy Poetry Gathering has event success

On behalf of the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, my fellow board member, Bill Lambert, and I would like to thank everyone who attended our fourth annual Barn Dance and Picnic at Rotary Park on June 10. Despite the devastating fire, the community came together for a few hours to enjoy the phenomenal Tim Sullivan Band with D.C. Duncan and Bill Boyer, as well as cowboy poet Lindy Simmons. In addition to the event being a fundraiser for the gathering and its youth programs, money was raised for the Community Foundation Emergency Relief Fund. Many thanks to the Cowboy Poetry Gathering board and their spouses for all their help in organizing the evening and a big thanks to Steve White and the VFW for providing food and beverages as well as Cream Bean Berry for donating their tasty artisan ice cream.

Also, thanks to Scott Perez, Susan Livenick and Jonas Grushkin for their help in securing the area. Thank you also to Jonas for providing us with memorable photos of the evening. The donations from the friends of the gathering allowed us to cover our upfront expenses, so a big thank you to: Niles and Carol Bruno; Dick and Sherry Colquitt; David and Deb Duncan; Evelyn and Bruce Gaylor; Julie and Richard Houston; Richard and Pam Jacobs; Bill and Mary Kay Lambert; Karren Little; Derrill and Nancy Macho; Sam and Tanna Noble; Christine and Howard Rachlin; Lindy and Eldon Simmons; Mary Kay and Bill Steadman; Jim and Janice Prendergast; Lisa and Loren Skyhorse; Sandy Young; and Larry Zauberies. We are grateful for everyone’s support and enthusiasm as we strive to preserve Durango’s Western heritage.

Thank you for a successful Fallen Officer Run

The Colorado region of the Choir Boys Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club held the Seventh Annual Fallen Officer Run on June 9, 2018. The event successfully raised funds for Colorado families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. This was the third event in Durango and the support, encouragement and generosity from the Silverton, Durango, Bayfield and Pagosa Springs communities was tremendous. We appreciate the recognition of our efforts and look forward to the continued support from the community for events in the future.
