One man’s trash is her treasure
To many of us, they are just rusty, discarded, junked-out pickups sitting in desolate overgrown wastelands. But to Santa Fe photographer Barbara Bowles, they are perfect subjects for her art, a metaphor for life’s travels.
Known as the “Pick Up Artist,” Bowles’ vibrant and nostalgic photographs will be on display today and Saturday at Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave. Bowles also will be at Sorrel Sky from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday to meet with the public and share stories about her photographs. The exhibition of new work coincides with the Durango Motor Expo Classic Car Show on Main Ave., which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Adding nothing to the pickups and the environments in which she finds them, Bowles’ photographs play with color, reflection, abstraction and nostalgia.

Can art affect nature?
Artistic beauty and natural beauty often collide. Usually it’s the natural beauty that influences the artistic beauty. The organizers of “Art for the Endangered Landscape: Honoring Wolf Creek” are looking to flip that, hoping works of art can influence how we think about our natural landscapes and resources.
Regional artists of varying disciplines will converge at Wolf Creek Ski Area from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday to showcase the process of creating art while engaging the public. Their goal is to draw attention to how art translates from inspiration in nature to ideas and solutions for land management, preservation and conservation. The event will focus particularly on issues relating to Wolf Creek along the Continental Divide within the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado.

Leaping dogs + water = fun
If there’s one thing in the world that is impossible not to watch and never gets old for a second, it’s a dog leaping acrobatically into the air, catching a projectile in its mouth and landing with a happy splash in a pool of water to the cheers of adoring onlookers.
Dock Dogs brings its aquatic canine leaping competition tour to the La Plata County Fairgrounds this weekend. The spectacle, featuring local and national competitors, is part of the Four Corners Pet Expo and will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The dogs will wow crowds in height, distance and speed competitions, and food from Old Tymer’s Cafe and beer from Durango Brewing Co. will be available for purchase.
