Five points separated the Durango High School boys swimming team from a third-place finish Saturday.
The Durango Demons placed fourth with 268 points at the two-day Montrose Invitational on Saturday. DHS entered Day 2 in third place with a five-point advantage ahead of Moffat County after the first day of competition. Moffat County turned the tide Saturday by finishing five points ahead of the Demons to take third.
Montrose won its meet with 778 team points, more than double the points of second-place Glenwood Springs, who finished with 329 points.
Durango’s best event was the 200-yard freestyle. The Demons took second, third and fourth in the event, with Ben Miller leading the pack in 1 minute, 58.10 seconds. Tommy Pannell was third in 2:00.84, and Paul Cross took fourth in 2:06.03.
Josh Miller placed second in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:10.35.
Josh Miller also took second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.11. Cross was third in 1:13.12.
Josh and Ben Miller finished third and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Josh Miller finished more than a second faster than Ben Miller in 1:01.15.
Durango’s 200-yard medley relay team of Cross, the Millers and Pannell took third place.
Ben Miller was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle.
Pannell was fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, and Cross took sixth.
DHS is off until April 5 when the Demons will host Gunnison.
