This is what’s right about health care

Recently, I received a letter announcing the retirement of Dr. Joe Murphy after 36 years in practice.

Dr. Murphy grew up in Durango and came back to practice in the town he loved. I have known Dr. Murphy for a number of years and he has always been very professional and friendly. In fact, he delivered the two most important things in my life, my daughters.

He answered all the questions I had about being a new parent. He explained everything from the importance of car seats and nutrition to vaccines to keep them happy and healthy. As a ski patroller at Purgatory, I always enjoyed riding the lift with him. I could ask him questions about patient care in an emergency situation or more questions about these two rambunctious girls running around the house. All with no co-pay!

On the softball field, we always tried to not hit toward him. We knew he was really good and was going to try his hardest to get us out.

Thank you, Dr. Murphy, for all you have done for the people of Durango! I feel you will go down in history as one of the most capable, kindest and compassionate doctors Durango has ever had.

Enjoy your retirement, and I’ll see you on the lift.
