The Durango High School girls tennis team had three doubles teams reach the semifinals of Pueblo South Invitational on Friday.

Competing with 16 teams, mostly from the Front Range, in extremely windy conditions, Durango’s No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 doubles duos all won their first two matches of the tournament.

Two Durango singles players and its other doubles team went 1-1 on Day 1.

“It was a good first day,” said DHS head coach Darren Tarshis.

At No. 1 doubles, Adwyn Chowen and Juliet DiGiacomo started the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Pueblo West. In the second round, they won a close match against Air Academy 7-5, 7-5.

At No 2 doubles, Lola Bradshaw and Ellie McLean beat Sand Creek 6-0, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, they lost the first set to Arapahoe 7(4)-6, but rallied to win the next two, 7-5 and 7-5, to take the match.

Rachel Ager and Isabel Bohachevsky started the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pubelo East at No. 4 doubles. They lost their first set to Air Academy in the second round 6-4, but came back and won the next two sets 6-4 and 6-4 to keep their championship hopes alive.

Ellie Davenport, meanwhile, won her first match at No. 2 singles 7-5, 7-5 over Pueblo Centennial. She fell in the second to Valor Christian 6-1, 6-2 but is still in the hunt for fifth place.

At No. 3 singles, Sydney Pritchard lost her first match to Colorado Academy 6-4, 6-1, but rebounded and beat Northridge 6-0, 6-1 in the second round.

At No. 3 doubles, Litzy Lopez and Addie Cady lost their first match to Pueblo Centennial 6-4, 6-4. They came back, however, and scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Pueblo East.

Avery Edgar, who normally plays No. 4 doubles with Ager, bumped up to No. 1 singles for the Demons, but lost in straight sets against Colorado Academy and Pueblo Centennial.

The Demons will wrap up the competition Saturday.
