Tina Peters, former Mesa County Clerk and Recorder, and four-count convicted felon, now has MAGA cause célèbre status. “FREE TINA PETERS, a brave and innocent Patriot.” “Let Tina Peters out of jail, RIGHT NOW. If she is not released, I am going to take harsh measures!!!”
That’s Trump, asserting that he is our chief jurist, lawmaker, and law enforcement officer. No matter how many exclamation points, he is not.
Peters was not dragged into a darkened room with a bag over her head and found guilty by a mask-wearing, no ID-carrying tribunal.
Tina Peters had a jury trial. That jury consisted of citizens mutually agreed upon by defense and prosecution who heard the evidence and delivered guilty verdicts.
Snapshot of Mesa County, where Peters was tried and convicted:
- The county overwhelmingly voted for Trump
- It has a Republican-elected district attorney who was elected by the same constituents that elected Ms. Peters
- The case was brought at the request of an all-Republican board of county commissioners
- It is Rep. Jeff Hurd’s home county
All of this while FBI director Patel shouts: “Nobody is above the law.” This begs re- defining the word “nobody” because evidently somebody is.
We are devolving into a society where laws only apply to those people Trump says they apply to; and those laws are only the law if he says they’re the law. There is no such thing as guilt unless Trump’s DOJ says there is guilt. This farce must end.
What say you, Jeff Hurd? Do you support a valid legal process, or is this not your fight?
