You know you have too much on your plate when you cannot find the silverware!
This past two weeks have been a whirlwind of change for this reporter. I retired after 17 years from one job and gleaned on to another. Part of my family successfully sold their home and have moved to the valley of the sun. In the process. I have lost an occasional golf partner.
Fall high school sports has sprung onto the scene and it is back in the radio booth to cover football. I finally have new glasses, so I can see what is really happening.
Beyond my friends doing the proverbial double take this week, life is looking up, or should I say progressively looking up and down without moving your head.
Hillcrest Golf Club
Tournament play has a off week on our area courses, so let us quickly preview what is around the next dogleg. Four decades-plus one will return Sept. 12th, as the 41st Annual First National Bank 1-2-3-4 Person Best Ball Tournament will be played on the Hillcrest Golf Club course. There is an entry fee of $35 per person, and 90-percent handicaps will be used for scoring purposes. Players must be registered by 8 a.m. on the 12th for the team drawing. Play will commence with a shotgun start at 9 a.m., and scoring will be net only. Give Hillcrest a call at 247-1499 to get in on the action.
Prior to all this action, the Durango High School boys golf team will host a one-day invitational Sept. 8 at Dalton Ranch. Go get-em Demons!
Dalton Ranch Golf Club
One of the mainstays of fall golf will take place on Sept. 19-20, as the annual Four Corners Stroke Play will be contested at Dalton Ranch Golf Club. Entries are limited to the first 96 players, so give DRGC a call at 247-8774 to see if there is still room to participate.
Glacier Club
Now, for the exciting news. The fourth annual Birdie Fest was held Aug. 30. This year’s event shattered the 2014 final numbers as far as pledges going to the Adaptive Sports Association. Club pros and members from Dalton Ranch, Glacier Club and Hillcrest traversed the magnificent layout over the course of 54 holes to see which team amassed the most birdies (and a few eagles), which team had pledged the most money and which team had the most pledgees.
So here is the tale of the tape on the day: The Glacier Club members pledged the most money – $28,000. The Dalton Ranch contingent had the most birdies and eagles on the day with 84, and the Hillcrest Golf Club came away with the coveted traveling trophy for the highest number of members pledging with 94.
But the most exciting news is the pledge total, so far, has risen to more than $39,000 and a final count of 219 birdies for the 2015 edition. Local hearts and pocketbooks are always in the right place for the A.S.A. Special thanks goes out to Glacier Club head pro Josh Coccagna and event sponsor Durango Motor Company.
