Golf tournaments are events that are fun in themselves and a great way to hone your skills in a competitive atmosphere. For that reason alone, tournament participation should motivate you to sign up and challenge yourself. Add to the mix a layer of community involvement in the form of a charitable contribution, and, there you have it, a foundation for a successful event.
Over the decades, locally and regionally, golf tournaments have enhanced their visibility by striving to give back to organizations with a purpose. Those individuals benefit from the proceeds generated from these tournaments. With all of this in mind, I begin my focus on a tournament coming up that reflects these thoughts.
The Durango Education Foundation’s 23rd annual Tom Hartney Golf Tournament will be held May 13th at Dalton Ranch. It is hard to believe this event has blossomed for more than two decades. I had the good fortune to know Tom in my early years in Durango. His steadfast dedication to improving the quality of education for both the student and teacher was one of his foundations.
Morehart Murphy Regional Auto Center has added several holes-in-one prizes for this event, including a vehicle valued at $35,000 and a resort vacation to a Fairmont Golf property which requires a person to bring their sticks. The TravisMathew company also has donated a $100 gift certificate to each participant to go toward clothing. I will have results from Friday’s event for you next week.
Dalton Ranch will host the annual Spring Four Ball, on May 21-22. Give the DRGC Pro Shop a call at 247-8774 to get in on the action.
Speaking of a good educational foundation, the 2016 Hillcrest Junior Golf Camp is set for June 6-9. The cost for this Introduction to Golf camp is $20. All equipment will be provided. The camp is open to youth ages 6-17. Registration for the HJGC will open at 1 p.m. May 15th at the Hillcrest seating area. Parents are encouraged to attend and ask questions about the camp being conducted by PGA professionals.
The Renovation Grand Opening Event for the Hillcrest will be held from 5-7 p.m. May 18th. We are seeing firsthand the transformation of the mesa-top course, and all those involved with this renovation will be present. Special guests, past and present, will be in attendance, which should make for a great reunion of sorts. Please plan to attend and celebrate this move into the 21st century and the solid future of the game of golf.
