Triples carry Grand Junction Central baseball to 14-0 win against Durango

Grand Junction Central had five runs and five extra-base hits before the Durango High School baseball team could record an out Saturday.

The DHS Demons dropped their second consecutive game to open Southwestern League play with a 14-0 loss in five innings to the Warriors.

“I thought (Friday) was tough, but it got even a little tougher,” DHS head coach Eric Baker said, referencing a 10-0 loss in five innings to Fruita Monument a day earlier. “Central came out and hit the tar out of the ball.”

Grand Junction Central (9-2, 3-0 SWL) tallied 20 hits in all. The Warriors scored 11 runs in the first inning and chased DHS starting pitcher Hayden Sill before he could record an out.

Andrew Martinez delivered a leadoff single, and a Brandon Martinez triple scored him. Jeremy Champlin then split the DHS outfield with a fly ball, and Trey Garcia blasted another triple to make it 3-0 in a flash.

Garcia then scored on a wild pitch, and another triple off the bat of Alex Schaneman gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead.

Orion Clay then relieved Sill, and he was welcomed to the game by Cole Rupe, who belted an RBI double.

It wasn’t until the second inning, when Chris Jaworsky came onto the mound, that DHS could slow the home team’s attack. Jaworsky finished the game on the mound and didn’t surrender a run in 2 2/3 innings of work.

“He was the lone bright spot. It was my mistake letting it get that far before I found the right formula,” Baker said.

DHS (4-5, 0-2 SWL) had five hits in the game, none for extra bases. No player had more than one hit.

Champlin pitched a complete game for the Warriors.

DHS next will play a non-conference game against Palisade at home at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

“We’ll get back home and get regrouped,” Baker said. “If you would’ve told me we would make this trip and not score a run in two games, I would’ve said ‘no way.’”
