Turner and Minkler: Former candidates congratulate incoming commissioners

Congratulations to Marsha Porter-Norton and Matt Salka, La Plata County’s new County Commissioners. They took the oath of office on Tuesday.

We entered the 2020 election as first-time independent candidates. We traveled the county for more than a year to meet voters and listen. We participated in person and online in candidate forums, community meetings, county commission meetings, planning meetings and other events too numerous to mention.

Folks drove from across the county to sign petitions so that we could be placed on the November ballot. The enthusiasm, kindness and support was uplifting. Many people gave time, talents, and financial support to our effort.

Despite the narrow margin of victory for Commissioners Porter-Norton and Salka, we are 100% confident in the election process, election officials (both paid and volunteer) and the final vote count. The record turnout of voters was especially inspiring.

All four candidates in the County Commissioner races ran on similar issues and we believe that it is imperative that all citizens give the County Commissioners the best possible chance of success. By doing so, the new commissioners can be held accountable.

We pledge our support to anything that will make La Plata County a better place to live, raise a family and earn a living. Our most important mission, whether locally, statewide, or nationally, is to get along with each other through respect, understanding, and common sense.

May we all work to that end for the benefit the community, our families and the future.
