Two races, two wins for Demons XC

The Durango High School boys and girls varsity cross-country teams pulled off the sweep Saturday at the Pagosa Springs Wolf Creek Invitational, as the boys won with a score of 51 while the girls won with a score of 44.

Junior Sarah Smagacz led the girls with a second-place finish with a time of 20 minutes, 56 seconds, and sophomore Abby Scott finished in third-place with a time of 21:06.

The Demons secured the win with finishes from junior Emily Edwards-Colsman (22:30) who came in 11th, sophomore Mary Fenberg (22:33) who came in 13th, junior Lilah Slaughter (23:01) who came in 15th and junior Maggie Wigton (23:07) who finished 17th.

For the boys side, junior Harry Steinberg came in fifth place with a time of 17:44. Steinberg was 37 seconds away from the overall winner Ro Paschal of Mancos, who finished with a time of 17:07.

Senior Tommy Pannell finished 11th with a time of 18:16, and sophomore Will Swenson at 12th with 18:35. junior Coltin Gallegos (19:09) finished 16th, sophomore Finn Hopkins rounded out the top five with a time of 19:22, which was good enough for 20th.

Freshman Aiden Fitzgerald showed flashes of greatness, as he finished 23rd with a time of 19:45. Sophomore Kaleb Harris finished with a time of 20:05.

Durango’s boys team has now won every meet it has raced this season.

The Demons will travel to Oct. 2 to Arizona for the the Desert Twilight Cross-Country Festival where Durango will meet Canyon Del Oro, Deer Valley and Desert Hills from Utah.

“We’ll face our at earnest test to date against the two of the top-five Southwest Regional teams as well as No. 13 nationally-ranked Desert Hills from Utah,” Durango head coach David McMillan said in an email to The Durango Herald. “It’ll be a rumble down in the desert.”

Bayfield High School

Bayfield finsihed seventh in the boys race with 153 points and fifth in the girls race with 123 points.

For the Bayfield girls, junior Bridget Goddard finished in 22:54, junior Rachel Cooper finished in 24:46, senior Lexa Fleming in 24:04, junior Amber Johnson in 25:58, freshman Sarah Ruybal in 28:58, freshman Mylee Sanders in 31:45 and junior Jade Sanders with a time of 33:45.

For the Bayfield boys, sophomore Sloan Mazur finished 21st with a time of 19:27, junior Bryan Gram had a time of 20:23, junior Joey Sandrey crossed in 21:05, senior Brandon Stuever finished in 21:17, junior Justis Herrera with a time of 23:01, sophomore Daniel Jenkins with a time of 23:17 and junior Jackson Sibley crossed in 23:18.

Up next for the Bayfield Wolverines will be the Chicken Creek Challenge in Mancos.
