Two Durango School District 9-R board of education seats are up for election in November, and thus far, only two people have picked up petitions to run.
Both are incumbents, Stephanie Moran from District B and Brieanne Stahnke from District D. They, and any other candidates who elect to join them in the two races, have until Aug. 28 to return their petitions with at least 50 signatures. Signers do not need to be from their specific districts.
Moran is an adult educator and GED program coordinator at the Durango Education Center. She was appointed to the board in February 2012.
Stahnke was appointed to an open seat for her district in December 2013. She is a project and facilities engineer for BP.
It’s an important election for the board as it transitions from seven members to five, said President Andy Burns in a recent opinion piece for The Durango Herald. Current board members Mick Souder and Greg Spradling will be leaving the board as it downsizes in a move approved by voters in 2013.
Petitions are available at the 9-R Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St. Candidates must have lived in the respective districts for at least one full year.
