Southern Ute Museum hosting "Hunger Games"
The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum welcomes all youth to the "Ute Hunger Games" Aug. 4-8. Participants will learn Ute survival skills about shelter, weaponry, food and fire. The morning session from 9:30 a.m. to noon is for children ages 7 to 9, the afternoon session from 1 to 3:30 p.m. is for youth 10 to 13. The cost is $120, and registrations are due Aug. 1. Ignacio First Friday is today
Ignacio First Friday is back today after taking July off for the Fourth.
Activities are from 5 to 8 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
Dancing Spirit Community Arts Center will feature live Celtic music by the Durango-based Kitchen Jam Band. Refreshments will be available. The gallery will feature artwork by kids in the Building Bridges through Art program. Attendees are welcome to build a creature out of clay with potter Kasey Correia.
At the Ignacio Community Library, Willow Blue will perform. The Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum will host a kids' craft tent. Also go inside and see the library's most successful art exhibit ever, including two paintings by the late Stanton Englehart plus paintings, mixed media, clay, jewelry, gourds, and textiles curated by art coordinator Renee Morgan. Enjoy some of the library's chili.
Roots Natural Food will have free soup available from 11:30 a.m. until it's gone.
The Ignacio Farmers Market will be set up in late afternoon behind Roots.
Ignacio Floral visitors can sign up free from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for the coffee club or the birthday club and receive a free carnation.
The Patio Restaurant will offer a special First Friday dinner.
Talk to a county commissioner in Bayfield
County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold office hours in Bayfield on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pine River Public Library conference room. All are welcome to come with comments or questions.
"Sometimes it's hard for citizens to come to my office (in Durango) with their concerns, so I hope to make it easier for them to meet with me to share their stories, and discuss their concerns, ideas, and issues," Westendorff said. For more information call 382-6219.
Football referees needed for youth games
Football officials and referees are needed for the Young America Football League games this fall in Bayfield and other area towns.
The first meeting for officials is at 6 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 6 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in the meeting rooms on the lower level by the cafeteria. It makes things smoother if a new official can attend the first meeting. Officials and referees are paid, so anyone looking to make some extra money might look into this. Knowledge of the game of football is helpful.

Ignacio library holding reading party, legal clinic
Ignacio Community Library's Summer Reading Program final party is at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6. Don Kirk, a local puppeteer and storyteller, will perform, followed by hamburgers and games. Prizes will be distributed at the party. "Bring the family and enjoy our final Summer Reading event," staffers said.
A virtual legal clinic will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8.

Bayfield preschool has fall openings
School is just around the corner! Bayfield Early Education Programs (BEEP) still has some openings for the 2013-2014 school term. Three and four year olds are eligible for preschool. All children must be potty trained to attend the program. For children who have educational risk factors and will be attending Kindergarten the following year, Colorado Preschool Program slots are available. Developmental screenings for CPP applicants will be administered today at the school.
BEEP has a sliding scale for tuition and scholarships and bartering are also available for qualifying families. Contact BEEP at 884-7137 for more information. Parents may pick up an application from the school at 645 Fox Farm Circle, or access it on the www.beepreschool.org web site.
Colorado Parks offering free entry Monday
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) will celebrate Colorado's acceptance into statehood with free access to all Colorado State Parks on Monday, Aug. 4.
Colorado was first recognized as a state Aug. 1, 1876. The first Colorado State Park was created about 80 years later.
"The preservation of beautiful places for everyone to enjoy is a uniquely American concept," said CPW Parks and Outdoor Recreation Assistant Director Ken Brink. "The outdoors is the fabric of who we are in Colorado."
Most Coloradans live less than 30 minutes from a state park. Park entrance fees are waived, but activities like fishing and camping will still require a valid license and permit. Coloradoans have 42 state parks and 300 state wildlife areas.

FFA boosters holding fundraiser at Fox Fire Farms
The Ignacio Future Farmers of America Booster Club is holding a Taste of the Four Corners event from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at Fox Fire Farms.
Dinner will feature a fajita bar by CJ's Diner and desserts by Baked. A wine tasting, entertainment by Lacey Black and silent action of local art is included, with all proceeds benefitting a scholarship fund for graduating members of the Ignacio FFA Chapter. Tickets are $40 per person and are available by calling Bridget Roderick at 769-0288.
