VAIL – The skier who died in an avalanche in Colorado this week has been identified as 41-year-old John Kuo, the Eagle County Coroner’s Office said Friday.
Kuo had been skiing at Marvin’s, a popular backcountry area just outside the boundaries of Vail Mountain.
Other skiers in the area found Kuo and performed resuscitation efforts but were unsuccessful, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
Rescuers estimated that the avalanche was 700 feet wide and 1,000 feet high, the Vail Daily reported.
Kuo, who went by Johnny, was a regular among locals who frequented Marvin’s, which is accessible through a gate on Vail Mountain’s eastern boundary.
Kuo’s death on Thursday came days after three locals were killed in another avalanche while backcountry skiing in the San Juan Mountains outside Silverton.
