Volunteers testing students’ eyes

Older adults aren’t alone in needing early warning of potential vision problems.

Serving the other end of the age spectrum, Lions Club volunteers since Oct. 8 have visited preschools and early-childhood centers to screen for vision problems.

The Lions KidSight Program screens for lazy eye, near- and farsightedness, astigmatism, strabismus and anisometropia. The program is free.

Holly Rutherford-Allen, executive director of KidSight in Colorado, said the Lions program tests about 33,000 youngsters a year for potential vision problems.

If there is a vision problem, the result of screening is sent to the child’s school, which informs parents.

Screening in the Durango area will continue until Oct. 29.
