Wash one away, play again on another day

You know the adage that if you wash your car, it will rain. Well, we have seen that oft times this same thing happens when you move your clubs from the garage to the trunk of your car and head to a tournament.

It will rain. Yes, Mother Nature just needed to green the landscape up a little more last Saturday and forced the postponement of the Hopin’ We’re Open season-opening event at Dalton Ranch Golf Club on April 16th. So, that being said, the event is now rescheduled for this Saturday with all the facets of the event still in place.

Time out while I check The Weather Channel. The gurus of the atmosphere tell me Saturday will be partly sunny with a 20-percent chance of precipitation and a high temp of 68. Yippee! I just hope this holds true when I head to Alamosa to do a doubleheader baseball broadcast the same day.

Hillcrest Golf Club

Let us start cranking things up at Hillcrest as the tournament calendar shows the JTM Music/A-B-C-D Blind Draw Scramble will be held Saturday with a $500 added purse courtesy of the sponsor and a $35 entry fee. Ninety percent handicaps will be used for scoring net only. Coffee and doughnuts will be served at 7:30 a.m., and players must be registered no later than 8 a.m., as the team drawing will commence at that time. A shotgun start will kick off the event at 9 a.m. I will have results from both local courses for you next week.

Preparations are underway for the Hillcrest Women’s Golf Association Opening Night Dinner and first Tuesday Ladies Day event. The annual Opening Night Dinner is set for Monday, May 2nd, with the usual social get together before the dinner. The cost of the dinner is $10, and 2016 annual association dues are $20. The organizers request you RSVP no later than Friday, April 29th by calling the Hillcrest Pro Shop at 247-1499.

Then, Tuesday, May 3rd, the first of many Tuesday Ladies Day events will kick off the season. As always, as I have done for decades, I will follow up with each week’s competitive results.

Dalton Ranch Golf Club

Last week I told you the Dalton Ranch Women’s Golf Association has been busy prepping golfers for the upcoming list of local and regional tournaments. The Association has arranged a great combo rate for their home course for each Wednesday Ladies Day event. I particularly like the reference to the free option for those who want to walk the events. There are some great benefits to joining the association and, if you would like more info on the DRWGA, contact Association President Bonnie Johnson at 259-5585 or email her at djohn1937@aol.com. Their first event April 27 is a four-person scramble, which is a great starter round to get the kinks out of your game. There are more specific game format details-so I will leave them up to the organizers to fill you in on game day.

A reminder about the June 15-16 Columbine Duet Charity Golf Tournament as the entry window will run May 1-7. A random drawing for the tournament will follow when the entry deadline closes. Give the DRGC Pro Shop a call at 247-8774 during the entry window to make sure you are in the random drawing.

On the regional golf scene, the Second Annual 2-Lady Best Ball Modified Scramble will be played May 5th on the Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, New Mexico.

And, in keeping golf in the forefront of our young players, the Golf Channel featured the Colorado PGA Section last Friday on their Golf in Colorado program. In 2015, the Colorado Section offered instructional sessions to nearly 50 schools statewide. Everything from putting, chipping and full swing play was incorporated to show how golf is a life long sport. This effort continues this year during the PGA of America Centennial Celebration.

Dave Bray has covered the local golf scene for 35 years. He can be reached at dbray3571@gmail.com.
