When I grow up, I want equal pay

Girls dressed as suffragettes chanted “equal pay for equal work” Thursday on Main Avenue.

Tiny suffragettes paraded Thursday afternoon on Main Avenue in Durango in the name of women’s rights.

Donning hats ribboned in white, gold and purple – the symbolic colors of women’s suffrage – second-, third- and fourth-grade girls from The Liberty School chanted “equal pay for equal work” as they trooped down Main Avenue.

“We’re studying history from women’s perspective,” said Pam Savage, a teacher at The Liberty School leading the protest. “It’s important for them to understand how few rights women had, and that we still don’t have equal rights. We still get lower pay.”
