White, Marbury; no on 1-A

If re-elected, Dick White and Sweetie Marbury will be term-limited and unable to run a third time. Clearly, the intention of the law was to prevent officials from becoming too entrenched. Just as clearly, the law envisions second terms with the recognition that experience matters.

Having served four-year terms on City Council, Marbury and White have mastered a learning curve none of their challengers have faced.

Their most productive years on the council should lie before them.

Re-elect Dick White and Sweetie Marbury.

Question 1-A is not just a simple extension of the ½-cent tax approved by the voters in 1999. The original tax was sold with the understanding that it would build the Rec Center and the River Trail. But the Rec Center is built and the River Trail is largely complete. And with that, the city has rightly looked at a what other projects it can address. All are worthy, but the overall list is not well understood.

The ½-cent tax will not expire for four years. There is plenty of time for the city to educate the voters about exactly where their money will go and for a fully informed electorate to vote on the tax again.

For now, vote “No” on Question 1-A.
