Jessica Cusick found her way onto the podium Friday at the Colorado High School Activities Association State Championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.
Cusick placed third in the Class 3A girls 800-meter run, finishing in 2 minutes, 21.43 seconds, following Eva-Lou Edwards and Michael Voss onto the podium for the Wolverines’ third medals this state meet.
“She looked really strong,” BHS head coach Sherry Kimball said of Cusick. “She went a really nice first lap and came home strong.”
The Wolverines’ boys 4x200-meter relay team finished sixth in the finals at 1:33.06, breaking the school record it set Thursday on the first day of the state competition.
“They keep bringing the time down,” Kimball said.
Their 4x100-meter relay qualified for Saturday’s finals, finishing fifth at 45.02 seconds.
Brittany Hunter took fifth in the girls pole vault with a personal-record jump of 9 feet, 8 inches. Morgan Allred and Katie Hawkins finished tied for 16th in the girls pole vault with Middle Park’s Sara Bausano at 6-09.
BHS still has the 4x100-meter final Saturday, and Conner Kennedy is competing in the high jump and long jump.
Edwards will run the 1,600 meters and will run for her second state title this meet, third this year and fifth of her career. The BHS senior, a back-to-back cross country state champion, also repeated in the 3,200 meters with her victory Friday in Lakewood.
“She’s gonna have some competition there,” Kimball said. “I think she’s ranked third. If she goes out and has a really strong race, she could come up with a good place.”
