Piedra Vista JV coach Lars Baker surely had his reasons for leaving Drew Petrie on the hill during last Friday's game on Day 2 of the Piedra Vista Panther Invitational.

Probably at the top of the list was the fact that holding Bayfield to just two hits - and zero runs - while fanning 10 in a seven-inning game is something of a rarity, even when the Wolverines visit PV's turf in baseball-crazy Farmington.

But inexplicably after the 9-0 loss to 4A PVHS, BHS managed just five knocks the following day while losing the third-place game 4-3 to the 4A FHS JV.

Sophomore Brody McGhehey took a tough loss against the Scorpions, allowing just five hits himself in six stanzas, with three K's and as many walks. Farmington snapped the game's 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth and managed to hold on.

Junior Matthew Knickerbocker received the 'L' against Piedra Vista, surrendering eight hits and six runs in four innings of work. He had no walks against four strikeouts.

However, a bizarre 11-9 defeat of the 4A Durango JV on Day 1 kept Jon Qualls' crew close to Class 3A's top ten in this week's CHSAANow.com poll. BHS was the top 'Receiving Votes' team-essentially the #11 overall-with its 5-2 overall mark.

Bayfield had led 9-4 against DHS before the Demons scraped together five runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Having entered in relief of Taed Heydinger, McGhehey earned the victory versus DHS when senior Trey Lange cracked a single to right, scoring Knickerbocker, and sophomore Zane Phelps came in when Lange was caught in a time-consuming rundown between first and second ending the top of the seventh.

Phelps later lashed two of the Wolverines' hits against Farmington.

Bayfield faced Piedra Vista's JV again yesterday afternoon.
