’Wolves defeat the ’Hawks in a low-scoring affair

For a game that featured the No. 2- and No. 3-ranked teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, this one was ugly.

Chalk it up to the officiating.

Chalk it up to the scouting.

CSU-Pueblo, second in the RMAC standings, held on for a 53-49 victory over Fort Lewis College on Friday night in Pueblo, the Skyhawks’ lowest point total this season.

Erika Richards led FLC with 11 points, and Christie Groh and Ashley Kuchar each scored 10.

Groh recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.

FLC women’s basketball head coach Jason Flores expressed his “frustration” with the lack of consistency in the officiating during his postgame interview on KIUP 930 AM. Then again, with just five regular-season games remaining on the Skyhawks’ schedule, these two teams know each other well.

“I thought we had them scouted well, and they had us scouted well; that’s when it becomes a defensive game,” Flores said.

Neither team shot the ball well.

CSU-Pueblo (17-6, 14-3 RMAC) shot 29 percent from the floor, while FLC (13-8, 10-7 RMAC) shot just 26 percent.

“We both did a good job of taking each other out of our (offensive) sets,” Flores said.

“Could we have played better? Yes,” he said.

FLC will play at UC-Colorado Springs at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
