Woman arrested Tuesday morning

Bayfield schools in lockout for 20 minutes

A 58-year-old Bayfield woman is in custody after a domestic disturbance call involving weapons was made on Tuesday just as school was starting nearby.

All Bayfield schools were put in lockout Tuesday morning after the incident took place on Fox Farm Circle near a preschool and elementary school.

A call was made to the marshal's office at 7:50 a.m. from the residence about a disturbance inside. Michael Wilson, 18, and another female left the house in the 700 block of Fox Farm Circle, and marshal's deputies took them into temporary custody because they knew a third person was in the house with the weapons, Marshal Joe McIntyre wrote in a press release.

Deputies then tried to call the house several times before the suspect, Margaret Wilson, 58, picked up the phone.

Deputies told her to come out of the house, and she was taken into custody without any further incident, McIntyre wrote.

Two handguns, three rifles and a shotgun were inside the home. McIntyre said Margaret Wilson was intoxicated and threatened to hurt herself, her son, and the other female.

Michael Wilson is in custody on an unrelated failure to appear warrant in La Plata County. The other female was cooperative with the investigation and released, McIntyre said.

The lockout took place at the beginning of school and lasted about 20 minutes, according to a notification sent to Bayfield school parents. The preschool, Bayfield Early Education Program, is located on Fox Farm Circle, and Bayfield Elementary School is a block away on Mustang Avenue. La Plata County Sheriff's deputies shut down the road and assisted in notifying the schools.

The lockout was made as a precaution, the district notice said.

A lockout is when the perimeter of the school is secured and doors are locked, but classes continue inside the building.
