‘Words inflame anger toward unhoused’

In response to Bill Roberts’ editorial last Friday, I wish to state unequivocally that I do not condone using public spaces as a toilet. However, I firmly believe this is more than simply a behavioral issue. Please ask yourself why this behavior exists.

It is totally arbitrary and biased to stereotype the entire unhoused population as the single source of alley/park toilet use. I have many friends among the unhoused community. Such blanket, uninformed statements about them are hurtful and unproductive. Mr. Roberts, your words further inflame the anger toward our unhoused neighbors. Your statements are also damaging to the efforts being made by some in our community to address the urgent needs of the unhoused.

You state that most Durango residents “would now say it (the homeless camp) should go away.” Be aware that homelessness is rampant throughout the United States, not just in Durango. Many communities have established managed encampments to address the needs of at least some of their unhoused population. Durango has yet to do so. Visit ninadurango.org to learn what a managed camp looks like and how a managed camp can be part of a solution. Also, research Safe Outdoor Spaces in Denver. There are multiple SOS encampments in Denver that have been highly successful.

Please be a part of the solution. Your unhoused neighbors need your support!
