Wrestlers compete in Pagosa

Barnes and Franklin finish as runners-up

After battling each other for the La Plata County title on Friday, the Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio boys wrestling teams all headed to Pagosa Springs on Saturday for the Rocky Mountain Invite.

DHS sent 12 wrestlers to Pagosa and nine of them placed. Eight of the 11 Wolverines finished eighth or higher and three Bobcats also placed.

No local wrestlers won the tournament.

DHS heavyweight Brett Franklin and Bayfield 165-pounder Deegan Barnes were the highest finishers, each finishing in second.

Franklin pinned his first two opponents but got pinned in the final by Robert Williams of Bloomfield. Barnes also pinned his first two foes to reach the finals, but got pinned in the third period by Josh Polkowske of Centauri in the championship match.

Ryan Dugan (113 pounds), Riley Belt (132) and Chris McGrath (150) all lost in the semis for DHS, but finished strong to place third in their weights.

Also placing for DHS were Cole Pontine (fourth, 144), James Storm (sixth, 165), Miguel Stubbs (sixth, 175) and Dale Harris (sixth, 190).

At 120, Keaton Pickering won his first match by a 17-2 technical fall. He lost 7-1 in the semis to an undefeated Aztec Tiger, Bryson Valdez, but fought back and beat Benny Carlos Gonzales of Rocky Ford to place third.

Other Wolverines who placed included Hunter Mars (eighth, 106), Payton Montgomery (sixth, 113), Logan Valencia (seventh, 126), Cael Blount (eighth, 132) Zayden Cundiff (sixth, 138) and Donovan Candelaria (fifth, 157).

For the Bobcats, Keaton McCoy went 2-2 to finished fourth at 150 and lead the team. McGrath beat him in the third-place match. Zane Pontine placed fifth at 132 for the Bobcats and John Nossaman finished seventh at 165.

Aztec ended up winning the tournament with 219 points, followed by Bloomfield (192), Centauri (178), Pagosa Springs (168.5), Monte Vista ( 136), Durango (125), Rocky Ford (120), Center (119), Bayfield (98.5), Monticello (83), Montezuma-Cortez (70), Taos (59), Ignacio (42.5), Del Norte (20) and Dolores (17).
