Young children can receive dental screenings

San Juan Basin Public Health is offering free dental screenings and fluoride varnishes for children 1 to 5 years old.

Kari Plante, regional oral health specialist, will be available in:

Durango on March 6, April 3, May 1.Ignacio on Feb. 15, March 15, April 12, May 10.Pagosa Springs on Feb. 20, March 20, April 24 and May 15.Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

The American Dental Association recommends kids get an oral screening by the age of 1. As soon as a baby has teeth, he or she can get cavities. An early start on dental care can prevent damage and decay later in life. All children enrolled in the local Women, Infants and Children program are eligible for a free dental screening and fluoride varnish, either during their WIC appointment, or at any other time.
