I am writing in reference to the long-closed gas station near the Mesa Verde National Park entrance on U.S. Highway 160.
A few months ago, an active duty military person wrote a letter to the editor exclaiming the inappropriateness of Nazi emblems being displayed on the building. These symbols were removed, and I thank the owner for doing so.
However, the protest signs remain, declaring the property to be a dangerous, toxic site and blaming the state of Colorado. Yes, there was an underground gasoline spill several years ago. As I understand, the responsibility for the spill was litigated and the property owner lost his case.
I empathize with the property owner and I understand his frustration. While his property has been damaged, the continuing display of “danger” and “toxic site” signage is also damaging Montezuma county, including our vital tourist industry.
This gentleman’s public protest has gone on for several years. I respectfully ask the property owner to remove all the toxic site and other protest signage from his property.
The removal will be a greatly appreciated courtesy to his neighbors and to the county as a whole.
