What a surprise this morning when I opened up my Friday, Feb. 8 Durango Herald! There, on the top of page 7A, was a header in bold print, “Bayfield & Ignacio.”
I was excited to read news and events from outside Durango’s city limits. When my family moved to the area 42 years ago, Bayfield was commonly referred to as Durango’s “bedroom community,” which irked me.
At that time, I think Durango didn’t even have a July 4th parade. How oddly unpatriotic that was, I thought. But quaint, family-oriented Bayfield did, which made us very happy, because we had moved from the suburbs of Chicago where all “little burgs” celebrated the July 4th big-time!
Perhaps it just took patriotism longer to work its way out West?
For many years, our family drove to Bayfield for their July 4th parade, which included “going around Mill Street twice” and the low-altitude airplane flyover!
Well, Durango woke up and finally got with the program with their own parade.
We’ve come a long way since then. Times are changing, and the Herald has made a financial decision to incorporate news from Bayfield and Ignacio. I’ve long thought that the sun does not rise and set only within the city limits of Durango, but also in Bayfield, Ignacio and all areas between, where us country folk reside.
I feel this change will benefit the Herald and all La Plata County’s residents.
