Health Careers Camp a great experience

With regards to the Southwestern Colorado Area Health Education Center’s Health Careers Camp, which took place from June 10 to 16 this year, the experience provides a great way for high school students to discern potential careers in the healthcare industry.

As a participant, integrating interactive activities like suturing a banana and injecting an orange sparked an interest to pursue a career in healthcare.

Along with fun activities, the camp provides the rare opportunity for campers to shadow a healthcare professional of their choosing. Everything from physical therapists to veterinarians were shadowed by students from all around Southwest Colorado.

This opportunity allows teenagers to personally learn the day to day responsibilities of a specific career professional. In doing so, participants gain key knowledge of the job, giving career direction to students as young as freshmen in high school.

The week-long camp at Fort Lewis College also provides high school students a taste of collegiate life as campers sleep in dormitories, eat great food in the cafeteria and play sports in common areas around campus.

Adding to the positive environment, the organizers and counselors at the camp are genuinely kind people who can offer practical advice for discovering and obtaining ideal health careers. For any high school student pondering their future in the workforce, SWCAHEC’s Health Careers Camp presents the unique and valuable opportunity to explore and pinpoint appealing careers in healthcare while having fun along the way.
