Thank you for the topic and format of the weekend opinion page on “Originalism.” I appreciated both Zimsky’s and McLachlan’s points of view.
The exercise of thoughtfully considering all sides of an issue is basic to fulfilling our responsibility as citizens.
Reading these two opposing pieces prompted me to move beyond the opinions expressed to form my own vision of an effective Supreme Court ethos – one I look forward to trying out on my friends. It’s usually counterproductive to think in terms of all good and all bad. It divides us from our neighbors who think differently and weakens our ability to meet the challenges that unavoidably affect us all.
I hope for more thoughtful side-by-side local opinions in the Herald and encourage readers to consider all points of view with a generous community-minded spirit.
