As a supporter of the arts, I’m writing to announce my support of Melissa Youssef for Durango City Council.
Durango is known for its abundance of riches in natural beauty, recreation and parks. All great things. We also have an equally strong draw with a vibrant community of painters, photographers, writers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists.
Arts and culture is not just a marker of a well-rounded society. It is an economic driver, a tourism draw and a tool for enhancing the man-made beauty in the midst of our natural grandeur.
I’ve known Melissa for over a decade and know her to be a patron of arts and culture in this town. She is open-minded to what defines this type of expression, too. When the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) movement gained momentum a few years back, Melissa immediately engaged to learn about STEAM education and public access to learning and tools for all ages.
In a time of competing attention for infrastructure needs and growth challenges, among other serious issues, I encourage us not to underestimate the social, economic and intellectual value arts and culture bring to Durango. It may not be the loudest voice in the room, but it’s a voice that deserves to be heard.
I believe Melissa Youssef will listen for it and continue her track record of support to ensure Durango remains a community that value art and expression in its varied forms.
