Vote for Montoya to keep LPEA reliable

I am greatly concerned that our current La Plata Electric Association board is attempting to cut ties with Tri-State and enter into an agreement with Kit Carson Electric Cooperative of Taos, New Mexico.

Kit Carson is making very lofty promises of being 100 percent renewable power by 2023, but the company lost $882,000 last year and was $100 million in debt at the end of 2015 according to the state regulators report.

Furthermore, William Steven Seeyle, a consultant hired by the co-op by Luis Reyes, the CEO of Kit Carson, stated in his report to state regulators that, “Without an immediate increase in revenues, the financial stress on the cooperative will only be exacerbated, and its ability to provide safe and reliable service could be impacted.”

Wait ... what? Reliable service could be impacted? Safe service could be impacted? No thanks! This is an over-leveraged utility that has failed to meet mandatory financial benchmarks set by lenders for the past two years.

I appreciate being able to come into my home and turn on my lights. I appreciate that my electricity is reliable and affordable; reliable and affordable because of the hard work of LPEA and people like Davin Montoya.

Davin has worked for over 20 years for reliable affordable energy.

I will support candidates who will make wise decisions with our energy, our resources and our finances. Davin Montoya has our backs in La Plata County. Keep Tri-State and say no to Kit Carson.

Vote yes for Davin Montoya!

Editor’s note: Kit Carson Electric recently withdrew from its wholesale energy contract with Tri-State; LPEA is not considering an agreement with Kit Carson at this time.
